Arriving into Mexico City was one of the more surreal moments of my life so far – watching the streetlights out of the descending aircraft window as they sprawled out further than I could see, or even imagine. Living in a small city on the other side of the world, where a drive across the full expanse of the city took under an hour, this was definitely an exciting and foreign adventure for me.
I have always had a bit of a thing for Mexico, and Latino culture – the colors, the sounds, the smells and the music, but most importantly was always the food. Since I can remember I have dreamed of comparing the local Mexican restaurants taco’s to a real one, eating bright and oddly shaped fruit I had never even heard of, or discovering the delights and layers of flavoring in a true Mole. Finally one day, all of my Mexican dreams came true.
The aim of the competition was to design a board on Pintrest, there was only one real guideline – That all of the images had to be relevant to the initial 5 countries they were launching these real food adventures in. The Goal? To outline and promote Intrepid Travel and these amazing new tours using the power of words and image curation. To this day, I still find it hard to believe I was the winner. Travel Across the world, flights, tour and accommodation covered – just bring spending money? Yes Please! Being offered a free trip to my dream destination to focus on one of my favorite things, food – this was all too good to be true. The very awesome (and no, I am not just saying that because I won a prize – they were genuinely incredible) Intrepid Travel crew offered a competition to mark the launch of their ‘real food tour mexico’, as well as a number of exciting other locations – offering foodie targeted tours of varying lengths around some of the most interesting culinary destinations in the world.
Turns out it wasn’t, it all happened – Intrepid were incredible. They were so organised and helpful with finding the right dates, booking my flights and transfers for me and ensuring that the whole adventure ran smoothly. Mexico was beyond everything I had imagined, I discovered my favorite taco of all time (Tacos al pastor), met a group of fun and like minded travelers and had the experience of a life time.
Our Real Food Adventure tour guide was a Mexican local, who had the invaluable combination of local experience, knowledge and language as well as lots of experience working overseas and understanding many different cultures. She shared interesting stories and mythologies as we went a long, as well as being fun, warm and inviting.
Each day was jam packed with possibilities, with a great blend of group activities as well as optional things to do – I felt like there was enough planned to keep me fully entertained, but with so much flexibility and optional free time to explore that I really felt as if I were on my own intrepid journey. We explored Mexico City, ventured around on local planes, buses and even the Mexico City Subway – testing out all the localculinary delights as we went along. We visited Mezcalerias, Aztec Ruins, The Blue House of Frida Kahlo, and local food stops along
the way. I still day dream about all the food that was tasted, and have a strong urge to get myself on the next plane back to Mexico!
I highly recommend Intrepid Travels, especially the real food adventure – It really was the experience of a life time. Thank you Intrepid Travel for a life changing experience!
